Welcome to the Office of First Generation Student Engagement at William & Mary, a new and dynamic initiative dedicated to supporting first-generation undergraduate students. Under the leadership of our inaugural director, Joselia Souza, M.Ed., our office serves as a central hub for resources, guidance, and community-building tailored specifically for first-generation students.
Our Mission
Our mission is to empower first-generation students by providing comprehensive support and fostering an inclusive community where they can thrive academically, socially, and personally. We aim to enhance their college experience and ensure they have the tools and opportunities needed to succeed.

Who We Support
We offer specialized support to the following groups:
First-Generation StudentsStudents whose parents/guardian did not complete a bachelor's degree. |
Students with Limited Family College SupportThis includes students who may have strained relationships with a parent who completed a bachelor's degree or whose parents obtained their degree in a different country, resulting in limited college knowledge. |
DACA/TPS/Undocumented StudentsWe provide support and resources for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), TPS (Temporary Protected Status), and undocumented students, ensuring they have access to the necessary assistance for academic success. |
Low-Socioeconomic Status Background/Pell Grant Eligible StudentsStudents from low socioeconomic backgrounds or those eligible for Pell Grants can benefit from our services, aimed at bridging the gap in familial college knowledge and providing essential support. |
WMSURE ScholarsWilliam & Mary Scholars Undergraduate Research Experience (WMSURE) Scholars receive additional support and resources through our office to navigate their academic journey effectively. |
