National First-Gen College Celebration

Honoring First-Generation Students

The concept of a “First-Generation” student was introduced into federal policy by the passage of Higher Education Amendments to the Higher Education Act of 1965. This pivotal amendment opened the door for many to achieve the dream of attending college, making it possible for us to celebrate the remarkable achievements of those who are the first in their families to pursue higher education.

National First-Generation College Celebration Day

Each year, on November 8th, we honor the signing of the Higher Education Act of 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. This act was a monumental step toward expanding college opportunities for low-income and first-generation students, establishing federal grants and loan programs to help finance their education.

Join the Celebration at William & Mary

During the week of November 8th, we invite the entire William & Mary community to come together to celebrate this significant event. This week also marks the debut of the Office of First Generation Student Engagement at William & Mary, dedicated to supporting and celebrating our first-generation students.

Throughout this week, we highlight the diverse experiences and accomplishments of first-generation students through various engaging activities. Whether you are a current student, prospective student, alumni, faculty, or administration, your participation is welcome and encouraged. Even if you are not a first-generation student yourself, chances are you know someone who is!

Activities and Events

Join us as we share personal stories and reflect on the profound impact of being a first-generation college student. Participate in a variety of activities designed to showcase the resilience and determination of these trailblazers on our campus. The Office of First Generation Student Engagement encourages you to create a similar web presence to promote First-Generation College Celebration Day activities each year.

Share Your Celebrations

We encourage everyone to share their celebrations on social media! Tag @COEtalk and @FirstgenCenter and use the hashtag #CelebrateFirstGen to spread our first-generation celebration.

Together, let's make this week a memorable celebration of our first-generation community at William & Mary.
