Transitioning to a new school is exciting — and has a lot of moving parts. We've got you covered.
New Student Orientation
New Student Orientation for transfer students occurs in both the fall and spring semesters. It is an important part of the transition into W&M. Orientation will introduce you to resources and people across campus.
At the end of fall orientation, on the first day of classes, you are invited to participate in Opening Convocation: our ceremony to welcome all new students and begin the academic year.
In the spring semester, new transfer students at Charter Day in a reserved seating section. After the ceremony, we will share a meal.
Advising and Course Registration
During orientation, you will meet with your pre-major advisor. This professor will help you finalize your schedule and complete your registration. They will make sure that you are on track to meet all the curriculum requirements.
If you are planning to go to a professional school after W&M - to medical or law school for example - contact one of our pre-professional advisors. They can help with that.
Declare Your Major
As a general rule, you can declare a major once you have 39 academic credits (including transfer credits); you must declare a major once you have 54 credits. The exception: if you transfer into William & Mary as an academic junior with at least 54 credits, you may wait until the end of your first semester at W&M to declare your major.
