Every student starts from scratch building new communities on campus. As a transfer student, you have a shorter amount of time to plug in and connect with people and activities. Fortunately, William & Mary is a great place to make connections.
Make Personal Connections
You'll be welcomed and guided through New Student Orientation, which offers introductory sessions and activities. Check the STEP events calendar to see what's scheduled. Connect with fellow W&M transfer students through a Facebook group - look for the #TribeTransfers hashtag on other social media. Living on campus is a great way to meet other students. Residence Life offers transfer student housing on campus.
Get to know your lab partner. Talk to other students before and after class. Seek out informal study groups - or start your own. Participate in a club, join a sports team, make some art, get involved with a service program. Group activities are a great way to meet people and start to feel at home.
Make Academic Connections
While your major and the COLL Curriculum provide some structure to the courses you take, you have a lot of decisions to make about your other courses. We have some advice about ways you can explore, connect, and create in the "elective" part of your undergraduate education. Connect with professors by visiting during their office hours (usually noted in the course syllabus or in their profiles online). Ask questions about the course, possible research opportunities, letters of reference, and ways you can excel.
