A new phone system for William & Mary
Introducing Teams Calls
In 2021, our current Mitel phone sytem reached end-of-life. In addition, the pandemic shifted phone usage away from physical phones and toward computer-based “soft phones.” Therefore, W&M IT began transitioning to a new phone service using Microsoft Teams called “Teams Calls.”
Pilot groups spanning eight different departments and about 140 phone users were transitioned to Teams Calls before the campus-wide announcement was made, reflecting high popularity and usability ratings. The rollout for the remainder of campus is happening in phases, beginning this summer and running throughout the fall semester.
Benefits of Teams Calls
- Modern telephone experience that offers enhanced usability, robust accessibility and device flexibility.
- Easy access to W&M phone service while working remotely or on a mobile device.
- Reduced telecommunication costs.
- Departmental phone billing will be streamlined, less expensive and predictable.
- Leverages Microsoft's O365 services and licensing.
