Client Services & Academic Technology
William & Mary Information Technology (IT) is a service-based organization, first and foremost. We strive each year to bring the best service possible to the university. Here's an update highlighting what's new this year for Client Services & Academic Technology, as well as some numbers to show the amount of support our team provided to the community this year.
Highlights
PaperCut
In March 2022, IT updated the lab printing stations on campus. Moving to PaperCut enables students to map to a single print queue instead of one for each lab printer. This drastically simplifies the setup and allows students to swipe their Tribe Card at any of our print release stations on campus to print their print job. It also allows students to pay using their W&M Express funds, rather than getting billed later. Learn more about the transition to PaperCut.
New Computers in Swem
For the first time ever, Mac computers will be available in Swem Library. The Client Services team installed 20 new 27" Macs and 20 dual monitor PCs for all to use. 20 new computers were also installed in the Dulin Learning Center, in addition to 12 PCs and two Macs on the second floor of Swem.
Computer Lab Updates
The Sadler Center Lab received six new computers, and dual monitor PCs were added to the Boswell and Law computer labs.
Throughout the past year we have been busy standardizing the hybridization model at W&M and making upgrades to classrooms that reflect the need for hybrid learning. Upgrades include new microphones and cameras to facilitate hybrid classes, including 29 microphones that are going in this summer and 24 completed this past year.
Classroom upgrades
- The W&M Peninsula Center had a complete overhaul this year, including new projectors, monitors, podiums and control systems.
- 21 classrooms on main campus were completely refreshed with new cameras and microphones.
Digital Learning Environment (DLE)
In 2022, IT and the Studio for Teaching & Learning Innovation (STLI) partnered to explore and evaluate the university's current and aspirational DLE. This collaboration builds on the first DLE study conducted in 2017 and aims to inform a university-wide approach for adopting digital tools and resources such as our learning management systems or academic technologies.

Recreating Support
This year W&M IT created two new verticals in Client Services. The first one was stood up to support the design, integration and installation of AV technologies for classrooms and meeting spaces. The other provides specific technology support to academic teaching and learning activities in collaboration with STLI. Additionally, professional school service and support structures have been realigned to be a part of the traditional client services operation.
