Global Village

Program Purpose & Goals

The academic and cultural mission of the Global Village is to immerse students in a living environment that fosters increased language study and cultural awareness and sensitivity. The Global Village comprises eight Language Houses—Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish—run by the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures. Each Language House hosts an International Fellow from the target country/region. Residents include students from multiple disciplines engaged in the study of that language and culture, and international students sharing traditions from home.

Student Experience

The Global Village will relocate to Pine Hall in the West 1 Housing & Dining Development for the 2025-26 academic year. All rooms are gender-inclusive and ADA accessible. All eight Language Houses will be grouped on the same floor, sharing common areas. Residents in each Language House interact with their International Fellow on the daily basis in their target language. International Fellows arrange conversation hours for those who wish to improve their language skills and organize various cultural activities in collaboration with residents. These activities include but are not limited to cooking events, movie nights, and celebrations of traditional festivals. These events are open to students beyond the Language Houses. In this immersive environment, residents and students can explore and experience cultural diversity firsthand.

Learning Outcomes

Residents of the Global Village will engage in cross-cultural dialogues, deepen their understanding of unfamiliar cultures and traditions, and strive to become global citizens. They also have the opportunity to enroll in MDLL 300, where they collaborate with their International Fellows to organize cultural events. Completion of this course grants COLL 300 credit.
