Criteria for Groups Seeking a Living-Learning Community
A Living-Learning Community (LLC) is a small group of students who take one or more credit-bearing classes in common and live in the same residence hall. Each community has a special academic discipline and is facilitated by at least one faculty member who works with other involved faculty and residence hall staff to integrate class work and related intentional interactions outside the classroom.
Special Interest Community (SIC) is residential experience that offers students who have a shared interest in a theme or topic to live in together and engage in related activities connected to that common theme. Special Interest Communities are not connected to credit-bearing academic coursework but may be related to a common academic pursuit (i.e. Women in STEM) or club (i.e. Philosophy Club). Other common themes may include Wellness, Gaming, etc. A full-time faculty/staff advisor is required to meet with the community on a weekly basis.
Both LLC and SIC communities require the faculty/staff advisor to serve as the contact of record for the community and partner with residence life staff in regard to meeting and assessing program goals and criteria, space allocation and room assignments, interactions with residence hall staff/resident assistants, and continuance of the communities from year to year.
While any recognized organization or group can apply to for an LLC or SIC through the established procedure for scheduling, the recognition of academically related groups in no way obligates the university to provide permanently assigned space or residential accommodations for the group members in separate, distinct housing.
It is expressly understood that those social organizations and academically-related LLC and SIC allocated housing space will be required to undergo regular assessments through the formalized review process. If the organization or group fails to meet the requirements noted herein or, in the opinion of the AVP for Campus Living, fails to remain an appropriately functioning organization, the LLC or SIC housing privilege may be revoked.
If your group ready to apply for an LLC or SIC residential housing space, please apply via the LLC/SIC proposal form.
