Measurement and Accountability: Who is responsible for the public's health?

Morgan is a junior studying Business Analytics and Data Science at William & Mary. She is involved in Griffin School Partnerships, the Student Organization Recognition Committee, Baseball Diplomacy, and a social sorority on campus. Off-campus, she works as an assistant swim coach. Morgan enjoys running, swimming, playing guitar, and spending time with friends and family. She is very excited to have the opportunity to learn more about how public health impacts her fields of study and explore D.C.

Yigit is a junior studying Biology and Mathematics, with a particular interest in molecular genetics and biophysics. He is an undergraduate researcher in the Allison Lab, studying the nucleocytoplasmic shuttling of the thyroid hormone receptor. At William & Mary, Yigit is the president of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) Student Chapter, undergraduate TA coordinator for “Intro Molecules, Cells, Development” in the Biology Department, lead captain of the Ballroom Dance Club, and a classical guitar player with the Guitar Ensemble. In his free time, Yigit enjoys reading 20th century literature, partaking in intramural team sports, and taking leisurely strolls around campus.

Maya Mitchell is a sophomore currently studying Public Policy & Biology. She is very passionate about health policy and would like to explore potential career interests. Maya is dedicated to serving her community and has an active interest in political activism within local elections alongside campaigning and voting education.

John Kearney is currently a senior at the College of William & Mary from Ridgewood, New Jersey. John is majoring in Psychology with a minor in History. He feels that his educational opportunities during the W&M Winter Seminar will reinforce his pursuits in a career of service. His extracurricular activities include the playing with William & Mary Tribe football team along with involvement in the Catholic Campus Ministry (CCM).

Aaron Chisholm is a sophomore studying kinesiology and on the pre-PA track. He is currently taking KINE 393, a health ethics class, in which he was recommended and encouraged to sign up for the D.C. Winter Seminars program Measurement and Accountability: Who is Responsible for the Public's Health? He enjoys studying biology and kinesiology, and learning more about how the human body works from the organ level to the atomic level. As he is looking to work in the healthcare field, he would like to know how the classes are served and how certain public health protocols function, especially in events like the COVID-19 pandemic. Aaron is excited to participate, discuss, and learn about public health through this winter program.

Teymur Zavar is a junior at William & Mary pursuing a neuroscience degree with a psychology minor with plans to become a physician. Teymur is from McLean, VA, and is excited for the prospect to learn about public health responsibility. Teymur hopes to implement the course teachings in his future career as a physician to provide better care to his patients.

Sam is a junior at the college majoring in International Relations. His time in Williamsburg has seen him serve as the vice president of the Kappa Sigma Nu Chapter, work as a research assistant in the government department for an independent research project focusing on civic activism in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and travel to Austin, Texas to compete in the NIRSA Club Soccer national championship for the first time in William and Mary's program history. His research interests revolve around democratic processes, international security, and American politics. Sam is looking forward to living and learning in D.C.

Natalie is a senior from Chesapeake, VA studying Kinesiology within the Public Health Concentration. She has volunteered as an Orientation Aid during the past two New Student Orientations, as well as having worked as a Supervisor at Campus Rec and serving as President of Women's Club Volleyball for the past two years. In her free time she enjoys hammocking by Lake Matoaka, walks through CW, and attempting to make a dent in her pile of TBRs. Through her time in the Measurement and Accountability Seminar, she hopes to gain a better understanding of the Public Health sectors as she continues her education at the Masters level.

Brenna is a junior studying neuroscience on the pre-medical track with a minor in public health. At William & Mary, she is a member of a social sorority, has been active as a peer advisor, and currently participates as a STEM panelist for prospective students. Off campus, Brenna volunteers as an EMT and works as a scribe at a local clinic. She loves to cook, do art, and take walks in CW. She is looking forward to spending the winter in DC!

Macie McGraw is a sophomore from Washington, DC. Macie is currently studying Biology at William & Mary, and planning on minoring in Chinese language studies and philosophy. Macie has a strong passion for science communications and policy. Outside of the classroom, Macie loves everything nature related, and she has been involved in an environmental research lab at William & Mary studying the campus watershed. In addition, Macie is a manager for the club ice hockey team and loves to get out on the ice.

Elienai Tesfaye is a junior at William & Mary majoring in Sociology with a concentration in Criminology, Law, and Society. She lives in Fairfax County up in Northern Virginia. Elienai is an avid jazz music listener (her particular favorite artists are Wes Montgomery and Oscar Peterson) and enjoys creating visual art through photography, drawing, and painting. She has volunteered as a daycare center teacher for several years and mentored children from the age range of 6-14 years old. She is passionate about protecting children's rights and creating an optimal space for children to grow up in safe and healthy environments. Her goal is to have a career in legal advocacy, working towards ensuring the reality of flourishing communities for children to thrive in. She hopes that her time partaking in the Measurement and Accountability Public Health Seminar will equip her to understand the impact of public health policies within the applicative space of the D.C. metropolitan environment.

Sammy is a a senior finance major at William & Mary. He is from Oakton Virginia and is 21 years old. Sammy is a defensive lineman on the Tribe Football team.His hobbies include cooking, working out, and spending time with friends and family.

Sarah David is a senior studying Finance at the Raymond A. Mason School of Business. She transferred to William and Mary during her sophomore year and is delighted with her decision. Sarah actively participates in the Mason School of Business peer mentorship program and is also involved with Women in Business. During her leisure time, she enjoys engaging in outdoor activities like soccer, tennis, and running. This upcoming program offers her an opportunity to explore a distinct facet of the world and learning, distinct from her familiar Business school environment. She eagerly anticipates the upcoming two weeks in Washington, D.C.

Isabella Strauss is a senior at William & Mary studying Kinesiology with a minor in Public Health. She is also on the pre-medical track. On campus, Isabella enjoys her role as a teacher's assistant for the chemistry department, and she serves as the president of the club soccer team. She believes her background in public health and participation in the D.C. Winter seminar will make her a more aware and well-rounded physician in the future.

Alice Mun is a senior from Richmond, VA studying Psychology with a minor in Religious Studies. Alice plans on pursuing a PhD and career in clinical psychology to contribute to the growing innovative research on and better public psychological health. She is excited to participate in the D.C. winter seminar and learn more about the field of public health!

Jayla is a junior at William & Mary. She is currently pursuing a degree in economics with a minor in innovation and entrepreneurship. On campus, she is involved in Tribe Innovation and Women in Business. Jayla is excited to experience what this program has to offer and broaden her knowledge in public health.

Madeleine Assaad is a senior from Great Falls, VA, minoring in chemistry and majoring in biology at William & Mary. She is a member of Dr. Williamson's lab where she is pursuing honors research studying the interactions of bacteriophages in terrestrial nitrogen cycling. Science aside, she loves studying foreign languages: she can speak French and is currently learning Japanese. She is also a founding member and the current vice president of William & Mary's Middle Eastern Student Association. In her free time, she likes to cook, spend time outdoors, and play the piano.

Griffin is a junior majoring in government and minoring in education policy. He is from New York City. On campus, Griffin holds positions in Kappa Sigma Fraternity and the Merry Men, W&M Men’s Ultimate Frisbee Team. This is his third time doing the Washington program and is excited to make new connections and continue to strengthen previous ones.

Kaitlyn Dunnigan is a sophomore studying Computer Science. Kaitlyn is from Northern Virginia and plays volleyball for W&M. She also love playing spikeball and watching Harry Potter. Kaitlyn is very excited to study in DC and learn from guest speakers.

Kaylee Kosar is a junior at William and Mary studying Kinesiology/Health Science with a minor Biochemistry; she is also on the Pre-Pharmacy track. She is a member of the Kappa Delta sorority, and the Morale Director of TribeTHON.

Abby is senior studying Kinesiology & Health Sciences with a concentration in Public Health.

Sophia Famiglietti is a junior at William & Mary majoring in Kinesiology & Health Sciences on a pre-PA track. Sophia is from Ashburn, VA, and she works as a medical assistant on the sick clinic side of a family medical practice during her summers. She is very excited to be participating in the D.C. winter seminar. She is looking forward to the collaboration and varying perspectives she will encounter during this program, as they will be invaluable for her pre-PA journey.

Olivia is a junior from Burke, Virginia. She is majoring in Biology and Environment and Sustainability on the science track. On campus, Olivia serves on the executive board for Ballroom Dance, works as a barista at Cold Pressed, and researches causes of milkweed hybridization in the Puzey lab. Outside of school she enjoys crocheting, embroidery, taking care of her mini jungle, and spending time with friends.
