Faculty Fellows

William and Mary Scholars Undergraduate Research Experience (WMSURE) Faculty Fellows mentor high-achieving undergraduate students who have been historically excluded and marginalized, who have overcome unusual adversity, and who contribute to campus diversity. WMSURE (YouTube link) is a program that supports high-achieving undergraduate students who have been historically excluded and marginalized, who have overcome unusual adversity, and who contribute to campus diversity. Some of our scholars are the first members of their families to attend college. WMSURE provides holistic sociocultural and academic support, research opportunities, and campus and alumni connections for our Scholars. The program holds weekly workshops featuring faculty and staff throughout the campus. Our staff has daily office hours, and peer and faculty mentors provide support to our students. WMSURE scholars conduct research led by WMSURE faculty fellows from across the W&M campuses.

We seek passionate, committed individuals who are excited to work with some of the best students on campus to serve as WMSURE Faculty Fellows for a 2-year term. Each Fellow will:

  • Serve as a pre-major advisor to WMSURE students.
  • Provide in-person support during WMSURE weekly workshops. These workshops focus on academic success, career paths, and especially research opportunities in the Fellow’s area of specialty. Fellows must be available 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Wednesdays to attend these workshops in person.
  • Participate in the annual WMSURE conference in the spring semester.
  • Conduct research with two or three WMSURE scholars in the summers of 2022 and 2023.

The Faculty Fellows’ 2-year term will officially begin on July 1st, 2022, although workshop participation during the Spring 2022 semester is required to facilitate the matching of summer research students with Fellows. Fellows will receive a stipend of $6,000 paid in the summer of 2022. Stipend levels for 2023 are subject to change due to budget adjustments. The WMSURE scholars working with Faculty Fellows are eligible for a summer grant that includes free on-campus housing. Fellows will be evaluated at the end of each semester on their participation and if attendance/participation is not satisfactory, the fellowship will be re-evaluated.
