Who Lived Here?
Front Street Residents in the City Directories
City directories from 1898 through 1952 identified many of the Front Street residents near the archaeological sites. The list of residents is by no means comprehensive. Other sources such as census records and local government records were examined, but the city directories provided the most insights, with cccupations, place of work, and names of boarders frequently appearing with the name of the householder. A quick glance through these lists shows a very high turnover rate in the neighborhood. Further research allowed us to generate another interesting list and map showing where residents moved on Front Street and elsewhere in the city.
