On the Move
Front Street Residents and their Addresses
Most residents on Front Street soon moved on, either to another house on that street or elsewhere in the city. It is not clear why they moved so often. Though some moves may have coincided with job changes, many did not. Perhaps the high turnover was driven by the company's needs. Through census data and other information, we were able to track the movement of several Front Street mill families to the streets highlighted on this map. The list below provides further information about the householders, their place of work, spouse, and other occupants of the house.
We also compiled a more extensive list of Front Street residents from city directories.
