William & Mary

Nathan Colvin is a Public Policy Fellow at William and Mary. He is in the fourth year of PhD study at Old Dominion University in International Relations, with concentrations in Cooperation & Conflict and Modeling & Simulation, while also studying Russian language online at Ohio State University. As a researcher, he led the development of federated, large-scale simulation research projects on the future of warfare. Later, he became Chief, Joint and Multinational Wargaming group, where he worked with each service and forces from dozens of nations. He now acts as a policy developer for the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, developing approaches to meet the social and individual demands of military service. His previous research at the School of Advanced Military Studies in 2013-2014 used a Complex Adaptive Systems approach to understand how exponential technological growth could contribute to expansion of transnational technocracies with simultaneous cultural balkanization. This work looked at a combination of individual psychological factors, dynamics of group formation, and the relationship between groups, demonstrating how exponential connectedness may act as a catalyst for societal differentiation.
