Interactions within Sustainability

William & Mary's approach to sustainability recognizes the dynamic interactions between society and the environment. We know that sustainability goes far beyond just the environmental dimension by impacting individual well-being, culture, livelihoods, economics, and governance. A sustainable world is flourishing societies, individuals, economies and environments. Sustainability as a mindset that recognizes the connectivity and intersectionality of the whole picture and is a lens that can be applied to any topic.

By treating our campus as a living laboratory, we expose our students to a systems-focused approach that challenges them to observe and question the interactions in the environment around them, enabling them with the skills they will need to solve complex environmental problems. Building a more sustainable future requires that everyone in our community do their part. That means making big, sustainable changes to our campus landscape, while also educating and empowering our community members to be environmental stewards.
