As William & Mary's multi-factor authentication service, Duo provides an additional level of security to prevent unauthorized access to a variety of systems. On March 27, 2024, W&M Information Technology will update Duo and the prompt you are used to seeing will have a new look. The new authentication experience is called the Duo Universal Prompt, and it’s designed to be even simpler and faster than ever.
Current Duo Prompt

After you enter your primary credentials to log in to the application, you will see your browser perform a quick redirect to a plain white Duo-hosted page that displays the Duo Prompt. The prompt will appear on Duo's website, duosecurity.com, rather than wm.edu, as the traditional prompt did. The difference does not change the safety of using the Duo authentication prompt. Duo's site is just as secure as W&M's.
Updates with Duo Universal Prompt
- Last-used authentication method: The Universal Prompt remembers your last-used authentication method (e.g. Duo Push, security key, TouchID, etc.) and displays that option by default. You will not see other available login methods until you click “Other options.”
- Automatic Duo Push: Once you land on the Universal Prompt, it will automatically send a Duo Push to your device without needing to click a button (if you use Duo Push).
- Updated visual appearance: The Universal Prompt has been visually redesigned with a simplified interface.
- Support for more languages: The Universal Prompt supports English, Spanish, French, German, and Japanese. The prompt interface will use your browser or OS language settings to determine your preferred language.
