AidData Summer 2015 Positions
Survey Practice InternshipDo you want to help improve the ability of development partners to evaluate their policy impact? Do you think that there should be greater attentiveness and responsiveness to the experiences and priorities of in-country decision-makers and stakeholders? If the answer to these questions is "yes," AidData's Survey Practice Internship is for you! In summer 2015, our team will support the curation of AidData's sampling frame of more than 40,000 development policymakers and practitioners in 126 low and lower-middle income countries. We welcome applicants from all majors and all levels of experience, with a particular emphasis on government, international relations, public policy, and modern languages (Portuguese, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, French). Interns working on this rapidly-growing project will have ample opportunity to advance to writing and analytical tasks and project management in future semesters. Non-DAC Aid InternshipThe non-DAC team at AidData is accepting applications for an internship during the summer of 2015, located in Williamsburg, VA. The internship offers an unique opportunity for students to work with data on the foreign aid flows of non-traditional, non-Western, and emerging donors of foreign aid. AidData is one of the few institutions in the world that is engaged in efforts to collect, curate, and analyze such data. Activity Coding InternshipAidData is dedicated to collecting project-level data from as many donors and donor agencies as possible, including multilateral and non-DAC bilateral donors, to provide the most complete picture possible of development finance flows and activities. As part of the effort, the CRS/Activity coding team codes and classifies international development aid activities according to the AidData coding scheme based on OECD CRS coding methodology. This summer we are looking for interns who have high personal motivation, self-management, and detail-orientation; and can make progress without direct supervision and could possibly continue to work for us after the internship. Geocoding InternshipThe geocoding team at AidData is accepting applications for an internship during the summer of 2015, located in Williamsburg, VA. Geocoding interns work on a variety of ongoing grants and contracts with aid donors such as USAID, the World Bank, and Asian Development Bank to track development finance to the project level. All internships are unpaid for 120 hours of the summer term, after which interns are eligible for a paid RA position. Housing will be provided from the start of their internship. Critical Qualities:

Policy & Communications InternshipAre you interested in contributing to AidData’s Policy and Communications initiatives by writing blogposts, monitoring key legislation and news coverage, assisting with social media updates, preparing briefing documents, producing original graphic design and multimedia, planning newsletter campaigns, and planning events and VIP visits? If so, AidData’s Policy and Communications team encourages you to apply for our paid summer internship to conduct policy-relevant research on the distribution and impact of development finance. We also work with our interns to scope out a couple of larger projects that interest them over the course of the summer. We welcome applicants from all majors and all levels of experience, especially those with backgrounds in government, international relations, public policy, and marketing. Summer Fellows Operations InternThe AidData operations team is looking for a mature, driven undergraduate student to support AidData's in-country capacity building work. The Summer Fellows Operations Intern will provide frontline management support for the AidData Summer Fellows (ASF) program, a 10-week field placement to promote open data use and impact in civil society organizations, donor offices, universities and think tanks in Uganda, Nepal, and the Philippines. The intern will also conduct research on the use of open development data by developing country policy-makers and civil society organizations and will conduct network analysis of civil society organizations in AidData partner countries. The intern will work closely with AidData operations staff to meet the needs of fellows and partner organizations in-country, manage logistics, mitigate challenges and risks, ensure coordination other AidData teams, capture lessons-learned and best practices, and support the growth and sustainability of AidData's in-country capacity building efforts. Availability during the full William and Mary summer session (June 1- August 7) is required, though availability beginning May 25-August 7 is preferred. This paid internship is based at the AidData home office at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA. Housing will be provided. Tracking Under-Reported Financial Flows (TUFF) InternshipThe Tracking Underreported Financial Flows (TUFF) project at AidData is looking for interns with Spanish and/or Chinese language skills for summer 2015. The TUFF team has created the most comprehensive database of Chinese aid to Africa publicly available. Our work has been covered by major media outlets like the Economist, the Guardian, BBC China, China Daily, Xinhua, Al-Jazeera and the Washington Post. Interns will be trained in an innovative open-source data collection methodology to research foreign aid flows China to South America and Africa, with the possibility of a free summer housing and a paid position following training.
