Waste & Recycling
Reducing, reusing and recycling our solid waste at William & Mary generates significant environmental and economic benefits. Waste and Recycling Services supports the campus goal to reduce the amount of material entering the waste stream. Our efforts are ongoing and multi-dimensional and include active participation from building occupants, students and student-led organizations, procurement and purchasing staff, and the Office for Sustainability. Building Services performs many of the day-to-day handling and removal services as well as contract management for the primary waste and recycling haulers.
The university diverts 21% of its waste stream away landfills. But, we need to divert 40% by 2023 to reach our goal. You can help breach that goal by reducing your use of non-recyclable materials and by recycling or reusing as much as possible the materials you use.
There are over two hundred (blue) recycling and (brown) trash receptacles located throughout the campus grounds. These are collected and emptied daily. Hundreds more are located inside every campus building and these are emptied twice-a-week. Dumpster pickups are scheduled weekly according to dedicated routes. Compactors have electronic monitors that schedule pickups once they reach 80% capacity.
The Department of Facilities Management is responsible overall for the recycling program.
