Lockout/Tagout

The OSHA standard for the control of hazardous energy (Lockout/Tagout) addresses the practices and procedures necessary to disable machinery or equipment, thereby preventing the release of hazardous energy while employees are performing servicing and maintenance activities. Types of hazardous energy that must be controlled includes electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, chemical, thermal, and other energy sources. Workers must also adhere to requirements while working on electrical circuits and equipment to include using proper lock and tag procedures.

Employees servicing or maintaining equipment may be exposed to serious physical harm or death if the hazardous energy is not properly controlled. FM Directive 781 has established procedures regarding Lockout/Tagout on campus. Employees are trained to ensure they know, understand, and follow the applicable provisions of FM Directive 781.

The Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S) Office conducts a annual audit of the program to include building inspections, editing the program document, and a review of training records. A copy of the latest audit is available upon request to the EH&S office.
