Nick Hampson, '13 - Community Engagement
Bipartisan Policy Center
Nick, a junior from Fair Lawn, New Jersey, is majoring in Marketing and Government. Through the Summer Community Engagement Institute, Nick put the ideas he learned in class about problem solving into practice when he arrived at his internship with the Bipartisan Policy Center and began working on compromise strategy.
During the summer, Nick had a “only in DC” experience at a reception at the National Archives. Introducing himself to a man standing alone, Nick quickly realized he had just met an U.S. Archivist. Soon after, two Democratic and two Republican Congressmen joined the conversation, and Nick listened to a debate between the four Congressmen over the debt crisis.
For future interns Nick advises: “Remember that we all put our pants on one leg at a time." While interning in DC you are likely to meet some people who are very well known in their fields; instead of being intimidated, be proactive -- introduce yourself, ask how you can help, and suggest useful things you can do to further your company's interests.”
