Gloria Oh, '11 - New Media Semester
NBC DC Bureau
Gloria Oh ‘11 participated in both the Summer 2010 DC Summer Institute and the Fall 2010 New Media in the Nation's Capital (yes, two programs - She states that it is the best-kept secret at W&M). Interning with the WUSA 9 Local CBS Affiliate as an Assignment Desk Intern (Summer) and the NBC DC Bureau as an Intern for Andrea Mitchell (Fall), Gloria gained enough experience to attend the Northwestern Medill School of Journalism largely funded by the Charles Center's Sizemore Fellowship for Graduate Study in Journalism.
Seeing the creative process behind a finished product topped Gloria's DC experience as she observed the making of NBC Nightly News segments from start to finish. As an intern for Andrea Mitchell, Gloria observed a true broadcast news veteran and learned to live life in the fast lane. According to Gloria, nothing fazes Andrea Mitchell, and Gloria now takes a similar approach. Case in point: Andrea told Gloria that Alan Greenspan liked her pumpkin bread. Gloria smiled and enjoyed the moment.
For those living in DC, Gloria recommends that you "Jump on it!" and never turn down an opportunity, no matter how trivial. She met President Obama this way. By signing up for an MTV Town Hall casting, Gloria was invited to sit in front of the president for a live taping. Better yet, Gloria had the chance to shake the President's hand before the night was over. Could you be next?
