Research

Research lies at the very heart of William & Mary, where scholars, graduate students, and undergraduates collaborate to expand knowledge of the world around us and to devise innovative solutions to local, national, and global challenges.

Student research starts on the first day of class at William & Mary. It doesn't matter if that class is organic chemistry or Greek tragedy. Students learn best through guided, hands-on inquiry and experimentation. And it's W&M's mission to incorporate projects of real scientific, scholarly and creative merit into every undergraduate and graduate course offered. By senior year, more than 80% of undergraduates have participated in mentored research with faculty.

Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration

W&M supports more than 20 research centers and institutions that are magnets for the brightest minds from every school and department across campus. They come here to mingle, make new connections and approach problem solving from creative new angles. Research centers and institutes are also places for focused funding, where the latest academic research is applied to real-world innovation for the commercial, government and non-profit sectors.

Mentored Research

The Charles Center develops transformative research experiences that cultivate academic excellence beyond the classroom. We facilitate a wide range of faculty-mentored undergraduate student research, scholars' programs, and learning opportunities through which students develop their knowledge and skills.

Global Research

W&M’s Global Research Institute is committed to creating unparalleled hands-on research opportunities for students, empowering teams of students and faculty to make a difference in the world. GRI is a multidisciplinary hub that brings together academics, practitioners, and students to apply research to real world issues.

Since the Institute’s founding in 2008, over 50 unique external partners have invested more than $70 million in GRI. Today, more than 60 faculty and staff and over 200 students conduct applied research with project collaborators such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Carnegie Corporation of NY, the William & Flora Hewlett Foundation, the World Bank, U.S. Department of State, U.S. Agency for International Development, U.S. Department of Defense, the United Nations, among others.
