Theatre Alumni

Many of our alumni have been deeply involved in departmental productions as students and pursued careers in the performing arts after graduation. While many of these accomplished alums earned degrees from Theatre & Dance, some majored in other disciplines while embracing the liberal arts tradition at the College. We are proud of our alumni and wish to continue updating our "brag" sheet.  Please submiy any additions, corrections, or clarifications here.

Jean Weisz '55 (1933-2022), PhD in Art History from Harvard University. Appeared in Grapes of Wrath at Cabrillo College (Aptos, CA)

Peter Neufeld '58 (1936-2015), Broadway producer who won a Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre in 2005

Linda Lavin '59, Broadway and television actress and singer who has been nominated for six Tony Awards. Credits include: Nine seasons as the star of the TV sitcom Alice (based on the movie Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore), The O.C., Broadway Bound (Tony Award, 1987), and Collected Stories (Tony nomination, 2010) 

Anthony Gallo '61, Playwright and founder of the Seventh Street Playhouse in D.C. Gallo is most recently in collaboration with composer Donald Velsey in writing the new musical Vandergrift! 

Scott Glenn '61, Actor in more than 50 films. Credits include: The Shipping News, Training Day, The Right Stuff, BackDraft, The Hunt for Red October, Camille, and Freedom Writers 

Thomas Lipscomb '61, Playwright and Senior Fellow at the Center for the Digital Future (USC Annenberg). Writings include: LAST MAN IN SPANDAU (2014 Playwrights’ First Award winning play) 

Robert Wachs ’61 (1940-2013), Theatrical lawyer and entertainment industry leader in television, film and comedy. Wachs was also the owner of Comic Strip (NYC comedy club), a talent manager, and a producer in film and on stage. Film production credits include: Beverly Hills Cop, Beverly Hills Cop 2, Coming to America, Raw, Delirious, The Golden Child, Harlem Nights, and Another 48 Hours. Stage production credits include: Last Dance (off-Broadway musical)

Patty Granville Holcomb '68, Director of the Garland Center for the Performing Arts in Garland, TX since 1982, which was renamed the Patty Granville Arts Center in 2003 in her honor. Granville Holcomb is also the founder and producer of Garland Summer Musicals

William Ivey Long '69, Six-time Tony Award winner and Broadway costume designer. Ivey Long has been nominated for 18 Tony Awards in costume design and was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame in 2005. MFA in design from Yale University. Design credits include: Curtains, Grey Gardens, Cinderella, Nine, Hairspray, and Chicago

Joe Inscoe '74, Film, stage, and television actor. Film credits include: Lincoln, The New World, 42, Nell, Lassie, Hush, and Kiss the Girls. Television credits include: House of Cards, East Bound and Down, The Wire, I’ll Fly Away, Matlock, In the Heat of the Night, My Name is Bill W., and From the Earth to the Moon. Theatre credits include: Death of a Salesman, King Lear, Race, Eurydice, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Woman in Black, Oliver!, and My Fair Lady 

David Dudley '75, Technical Director at William & Mary. In 2012, Dudley received the Charles and Virginia Duke Award for outstanding service and dedication to the College.

Jeffrey West '75, Professor of Theatre at UNC-Greensboro, Elon University, and High Point University. Bill Schermerhorn '82, Creative Director of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and an Emmy-winning songwriter. Schermerhorn was an artist-in-residence at William & Mary in 2017, and two of his recent musicals, Swing Wings and MADam LUCY, deceased, have been presented at the university

Patton Oswalt '91, Comedian, actor, writer, producer, and author. Oswalt has won an Emmy Award and a Grammy Award for his comedy album Talking for Clapping and has been nominated for numerous other projects. Vivian Appler '97, Associate Professor of Performance Studies at the University of Georgia. Appler was a Visiting Instructor in mask-making at William & Mary from 2009-10 and received a Fulbright in 2011 for a performance project in Switzerland. Elise (Molinelli) Gulan '97, Actor, singer, and dancer in New York City. Gulan is also an exercise consultant on television and has several published exercise DVDs  

Matt Kopans '97, Lighting designer in Sarasota Springs, NY and Managing Director at Universal Preservation Hall. MA in Theater History from the University of Pittsburgh, MAM (Arts Management) from Carnegie Mellon University

Brian Lewis '97, One of the top ten most innovative real estate professionals in the USA by Inman News. The New York Times calls him the "luxury hand holder," and Brian's iconic property videos have attracted global attention. People Magazine named one of Brian's video tours as "the best the real estate world has ever seen." A regular media commentator, Brian is a nationally ranked, luxury closer who was encouraged to pursue real estate when he sought the services of the Actor's Fund's (Actor's Work Program) during the Screen Actor's Guild strike in 1999. Kathryn Van Meter '97, Actor and Choreographer. Van Meter has choreographed for musical theatre at Village Theatre and served as a Teaching Artist at Seattle Children’s Theatre. Work includes: Yankee Doodle Dandy (Fox Theatre, Seattle), Steel Magnolias and Girl of My Dreams (Village Theatre, Seattle) 

Clarence Coo '98, Playwright. Coo received the Yale Drama Series Award in 2012 for Beautiful Province, and his Chapters of a Floating Life won the Weissberger New Play Award in 2023. MFA in Playwriting from Columbia University
