Background
Born in South Korea, HyoJoo Uh received her Bachelor's degree from the Colburn School Conservatory of Music, in Los Angeles, and her Master's degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Her primary teachers were Paul Coletti and Robert Vernon. Before her time with the Richmond Symphony, HyoJoo was a member of the Akron and Canton Symphonies and has perormed in master classes taught by Helen Callus, Heidi Castleman, Carrie Dennis, Richard O'Neil, Jeff Irvine and Pinchas Zukerman. In 2010, she made her Carnegie Hall debut with the Hill Piano Quartet as a participant of the Brahms Chamber Music Workshop. During that time, she worked with Yo-Yo Ma, Leon Fleisher and Pamela Frank. HyoJoo has also served as the Assistant Principal Violist in National Repertory Orchestra where she was featured as a soloist playing Max Bruch's Romanze. In 2016, HyoJoo joined the Richmond Symphony as Assistant Principal Violist.
HyoJoo is an active violin and viola teacher. In 2013, she became a certified Suzuki violin teacher. Since then, she has incorporated the Suzuki method in her teaching. She has also coached various youth orchestra viola sectionals in the Richmond area. In the Summer of 2016, she was chamber music coach at the Orchestra Project: Intensive Chamber Music program. She also served as viola faculty at Global Summer Institute of Music in 2017.
In her spare time HyoJoo loves to spend time cooking or outdoor hiking.
