Overview from the Department Chair

In fall 2023, the department moved into the long-awaited Music Arts Center.  The building features the 125-seat Comey Recital Hall, the state-of-the-art Vlahakis Recording Studio, and the 425-seat Concert Hall which houses the 3-manual, 24-rank Peragallo Opus 652 organ.  Other spaces include two classrooms, instrumental and choral rehearsal rooms, a global ensembles rehearsal room, and a historic keyboard room.  The new space is quickly becoming recognized as a regional arts center.  In the past year, the department has hosted events by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, the Virginia Arts Festival, the College Music Society, the Historic Keyboard Society of North America, and the Williamsburg Music Club.

Each semester, nearly a quarter of W&M undergraduates participate in music courses, applied lessons, and ensembles, and thousands of music lovers attend performances by our students, faculty, and guest artists.  Your support helps us provide the highest quality experience for all patrons of the Music Arts Center.

Please continue reading to learn how your contribution can help address our areas of greatest need.  To make an online contribution, click on the GIVE TO MUSIC button below.  If you would prefer to contribute by check, please consult Ways to Contribute to make sure your gift is allocated correctly. Give to Music

How You Can Support the Department of Music
  • Give to the Music Department’s general fund.  These funds support the department’s most pressing needs including:
          publicity and marketing materials
          guest artist fees
          purchasing, repairing, and maintaining instruments
for our large and small ensembles
          music rental fees
software and equipment for our music technology courses
  • Name a seat in the Concert Hall or Comey Recital Hall.  Contributions support the Music Building Enhancement and Maintenance Fund which helps us maintain the sophisticated acoustic, sound, and lighting systems in our performance venues.  Other naming opportunities can be found here.

  • Support applied lesson scholarships.  Each semester, between 600 and 700 students take lessons with our outstanding applied faculty which includes members of the Virginia Symphony and Richmond Symphony as well as instructors in voice, jazz, and folk instruments, many of whom tour nationally and internationally.
          Frances Breeze Scholarship Endowment
Woodrow and Ruth Maynard Endowment for Music
          Gladys Iseman Clark Scholarship
  • Support the Ewell Concert Series.  Each year, the Music Department produces 6-8 concerts featuring artists of the highest caliber from all genres.  These artists often give masterclasses and guest lectures in conjunction with their performances.  Past performers include the Esterhazy Trio, VSO String Quartet, Aïcha Redouane and Habib Yammine, Howard Levy, Irfan Khan, Kadencia, and Imani Winds.

  • Help us maintain our pianos and other keyboard instruments, including the Peragallo Opus 652 organ.  Since moving into the Music Arts Center, we have purchased 20 new pianos including a Steinway Concert D for our Concert Hall.  All of these instruments, as well as our collection of historic keyboard instruments, need regular maintenance and tuning.  Your gift helps us keep these instruments in top condition.
