Jing Li is a PhD candidate in cultural studies at Stony Brook University. Her research interests include Chinese independent documentary, the history of Chinese cinema, rural sociology, as well as women and gender studies. Her dissertation, entitled Filming Villages: The Representation of Rural China in Chinese Independent Cinema since 2000, examines how independent cinema opens up an aesthetic space to village experience and helps us to explore the issues of rural culture. Prior to her doctoral training in the U.S., she received her MA from Nanjing University and worked as an editor for the publishing press and art museum in Shanghai, China. At William & Mary, she teaches courses on modern Chinese literature, Chinese cinema and cultural studies.
