Marking the commencement of the new academic year, the International Fellows, under the supervision of Blanca Tyler, organized the much-anticipated International Desserts Night. Hailing from Argentina, Germany, France, Morocco, China, Russia, Japan, and Italy, the fellows not only animate the Language Houses throughout the year, but they also transformed the Landrum Hall with vibrant colors, tantalizing aromas, and diverse flavors representing cultures from across the globe.
Friday, Sept. 22, the College of William and Mary’s Department of Modern Languages and Literatures issued a statement opposing West Virginia University’s recent decision to discontinue its World Languages, Literatures and Linguistics Program.
Baylee manages to multiply herself and teach English to immigrants and refugees at the Washington English Center, and to both professionals and K-12 students at a Korea-based startup. Her main activity, however, consists of implementing the State Department’s International Visitor Leadership Program, and developing programs and opportunities to bring foreign leaders to the US in support of US foreign policy goals. At the IVLP, Baylee was recently promoted to Senior Program Associate.
Sam is excited to open a new chapter of her life this coming fall, and advance her skills for research and service, as she will start a Master’s degree in Spanish Literature and Culture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This program will allow Sam to enhance her pedagogical profile.
Estonia is the next destination of PBK inductee Tom J. Plant (HISP & IR ’22). Thanks to a most prestigious and extremely competitive Fulbright Research Award, Tom, currently an analyst at Valens Global, will spend 9 months designing and analyzing wargames as media literacy for national defense that can serve address the dangers of mis/disinformation as a national security threat.
On Friday, April 7, the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures hosted our annual spring event, the Undergraduate Research Showcase, in Blow 332. We were excited to have seven presenters and five wonderful presentations from the Chinese, French/Francophone, and Russian studies programs.
Prof. Brehm's new book Kaleidophonic Modernity (Fordham UP, 2023) explores the development of mechanical sound recording technology in the nineteenth century by charting the orbits of writers, scientists, and artists in France and the United States.
The Hispanic Studies program caught up with Dr. Álvaro Garrote Pascual, the newest tenure hire in Hispanic Studies, after his first full semester teaching at William & Mary.
