The Global Village

Want an international experience while still living on campus?

Language House Advisors & International Fellows hosting an International Desserts Night - September 2023We’re thrilled to announce the new Global Village, our residential living-learning community for students of languages other than English—and their associated cultures. The Global Village comprises eight Language Houses—Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish—each hosted by a native-speaking International Fellow, where you can live and study with other students and participate in a variety of cultural events, gaining cross-cultural skills and global awareness.

Next academic year 2025-26, we are moving to a brand-new building, Pine Hall, in the West 1 Housing & Dining development. All eight houses will now be grouped together in a single facility with common areas for hosting movie nights, exhibits, talks, workshops, and other events that promote cross-cultural dialogues and a deeper understanding of international issues and our roles as global citizens.

Students residing in the Global Village have an option to enroll in MDLL 300 and receive credit for COLL 300. Those who enroll will organize cultural events together with International Fellows and receive 1.5 credits for one semester, 3 credit for two semesters.

Read some former language house residents’ comments about their experiences living in these houses and what makes them so special!

Before applying, please review the housing process for next academic year. Learn more about gender-inclusive housing and about Living-Learning Communities.

You do NOT need to be majoring in a program to live in its Language House, but you should have a basic background in the target language equivalent to the 102 or 103 level. Students enrolled in MLL's courses will have preference to live in the houses over students who are not. The language houses are open to sophomore, junior, and senior students.

For more information about The Global Village, requirements to live in one of our language houses, and the timeline please visit the application information page or contact Modern Languages & Literatures.
