Michael Halleran Publishes New Book
Michael Halleran, who established himself as one of the premier scholars of Greek tragedy with his 1985 monograph Stagecraft in Euripides, has produced a fresh translation of one of the tragedian’s most revered works, the Alcestis, originally staged in 438 BCE. In his translation, Professor Halleran has captured the “the thought, images, and structure of the original” Greek while also following the movement of the poetry by matching “each line of English” with its “Greek counterpart.” In addition to the translation, the volume features an introduction detailing the social and political context of Euripides’ time as well as the circumstances of the play’s original production, notes that illuminate various aspects of Euripides’ art, and an essay elucidating the major themes of the play.
