Letters of Recommendation

Only one recommendation letter is required (and it is from your high school counselor). This letter provides us with context on who you are as a student in relation to your classmates. It lets us know if your courseload is particularly demanding and if there are any extenuating circumstances that may have impacted your grades. Counselors give us a sense of how visible you are within your peer group as well as background on your high school in general.

How many additional recommendations can you submit?

You can submit more than one recommendation letter, we generally recommend 1-3. Our record for one applicant is 21 (that is too many, please don’t send us 21 letters of recommendation).

Who else should you ask?

A teacher, coach or volunteer coordinator who knows you well would be excellent choices. We advise that you do not ask elementary or middle school teachers, someone who may get your name wrong in the letter or someone whose name doesn’t match the stationery (assistant or chief of staff writing a letter in someone’s place).
