Black Opera Recital
The 50th commemoration planning committee in collaboration with Opera in Williamsburg, Inc, through its founder and artistic director, Naama Zahavi-Ely, invited outstanding African American opera singers for a gala evening on April 13, 2018. Maestro Richard Cordova curated and accompanied performances by Melanie Campbell, Bernard Holcomb, Kenneth Overton, Mari Yan Pringle, and Brandie Sutton. The concert focused on operas by African American composers, operas about the African American experience, and mainstream opera, as well as African American musical genres such as spirituals and jazz that influenced opera.
