Alumni Awards Dinner
An awards dinner honoring Lynn Briley ’71, Karen Ely ’71 and Janet Brown Strafer ’71, M.Ed. ’77, the first African American students in residence at William & Mary, was held at the Mason School of Business Saturday night, April 14, 2018. In addition to the Legacy 3, also recognized were other achievements of William & Mary’s African American alumni. The keynote speaker, Charlayne Hunter-Gault (American journalist, former foreign government correspondent for National Public Radio) is one of the first two African American students to integrate the University of Georgia. The Mistress of Ceremony was Dr. Ruth Jones Nichols ’96. The evening also included performances by one of William & Mary’s student a cappella groups Flow, a student dance group organized by DeLauren Davis ’18, singer/songwriter Russell Taylor ’96 and the Harris Simon’s Jazz Trio. An original print titled Clap to This, by artist Steve Prince was auctioned, with proceeds going toward the Legacy Tribute Garden. Cheryl Wesley ’78 made the winning bid.
