An immigrant and refugee from Vietnam, Stephanie Murphy is the first woman in her family to attend college. During her time at William & Mary, she majored in economics, was a member of the Chi Omega sorority, a Japanese House resident and a research assistant. She also studied abroad and served on the Student Alumni Council. "My education at William & Mary prepared me to be an effective engaged citizen, and to be somebody who cares about this country and where it is going," she says.

Stephanie, the first Vietnamese-American woman elected to Congress, represented Florida’s Seventh Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2017-2022. Before being elected, she worked as a college instructor and as a national security specialist in the Office of the U.S. Secretary of Defense. She now serves on several boards related to national security and as a Pritzker Fellow at the Institute of Politics at University of Chicago.
