Lieutenant Colonel John Ringquist is the Senior Defense Officer/Defense Attaché for Angola and Sao Tomé and Principe. He is an Engineer Officer and a Foreign Area Officer specializing in Africa.
Lieutenant Colonel Ringquist is originally from Hagerstown, Maryland and graduated from the Mount Saint Mary’s College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. He graduated from Officer Candidate School in 1999 and commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Engineers. In 2005, Lieutenant Colonel Ringquist earned a Master of Public Policy and Public Administration from the University of Missouri, and in 2009 he completed a Masters of Arts in History from the University of Kansas, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy degree in History from the University of Kansas in 2012. Lieutenant Colonel Ringquist also holds degrees in Biology and is an active Army Research Lab fellow for climate change and biosensors.
Lieutenant Colonel Ringquist’s 2000-2003 assignments include Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, Battalion S3, and Battalion Adjutant 70th Engineer Battalion, Fort Riley, KS where he served as the Battalion S-1 during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. He also served as Task Force Commandant, United States Intelligence Center, Sarajevo in 2001. He followed his Captain’s Course with a tour in Qatar 2004-2005 as the Department of Public Works Officer for Camp As Saliyah. Lieutenant Colonel Ringquist was Echo Company, 3-10 Infantry Company Commander 2005-2007. He taught History at the United States Military Academy 2009-2012 as an Assistant, and later Associate Professor. Lieutenant Colonel Ringquist has also taught at Marymount University, the National Intelligence University, and Georgetown University on topics relating to cyber security, Africa, law enforcement, policy, and intelligence. Lieutenant Colonel Ringquist’s embassy assignments include serving as an Office of Security Cooperation Chief at the U.S Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, and as the Army Attaché in Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, and Cabo Verde. Lieutenant Colonel John P. Ringquist served as the Branch Chief for the USAFRICOM J53 in Stuttgart, Germany 2019-2021.
Lieutenant Colonel Ringquist is a frequent contributor to academic journals and publications and has written extensively about climate change, environmental history, emergent disease and security challenges, and resource conflict.
