Transportation

Why is Sustainable Transportation Important?

When you think of greenhouse gases, the exhaust coming from the tailpipe of a car may readily come to mind — and you'd be correct! Transportation comprised 28% of the total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by the economic sector in 2018, stemming from increased carbon dioxide emissions produced by petroleum combustion. By making our transportation more sustainable, we can (almost visibly!) reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere, effectively cleaning our air and shrinking our personal carbon footprints.

Tips for Traveling Sustainably
  • Opt for biking instead
    • W&M Transportation Services has installed 7 fix-it stations across campus that are equipped with all of the tools you need to keep you bike in good shape
    • Two-hour professional mechanical services sessions are also offered on alternating Mondays during the semester, and are designed to help students learn to get the most out of their bike; visit the Transportation Services website for more info!
  • Park once and drive less! Instead of driving to locations that are in the same general area, park in one convenient location and use other means of travel, like walking, biking, or public transportation, to get to your destinations
  • Carpool or ride-share instead of driving, if you feel comfortable and safe doing so
  • Easily and efficiently traverse the Williamsburg Area using the WATA lines; Route 8 provides a connection all the way across campus, from the Grad Plex to the School of Education, and back!
