Spring 2012
1. Recreation Center Lighting- $5,600 to Katie Robinson and advisor Dan Patterson, Associate Director of Utilities for Facilities Management
13 wall switch sensors and 10 ceiling mount sensors were installed in 16 rooms throughout the Recreation Center to save on energy costs and decrease consumption. The ultimate goal is to retro-fit the Recreation Center and increase the building's LEED Certification.
2. Permanent Bike Racks- $5,934 to John McFarlane, Associate Director of Grounds & Gardens for Facilities Management
Several new bike racks were installed in front of the buildings on the Sunken Garden to encourage students and faculty to ride their bikes to class/work.
3. Exterior Recycling Bins- $15,226 to Bob Avalle, Director of Operations and Maintenance for Facilities Management
As a part of the process to create a comprehensive single-stream recycling program across campus, we approved 27 new external recycling bins. The project is estimated to increase savings as the removal of recycled goods is cheaper than the price of trash removal.
4. Wren Lighting Retrofit- $17,200 to Dan Patterson, Associate Director of Utilities for Facilities Management
This project renovated the lighting surrounding the Wren building to update the existing 26 features with 60 watt LED arrays. The project is expected to pay for itself in 6.1 years thanks to the savings in energy costs.
5. Law Clinic Secure Paperless Document Retention System- $3,500 to Laurie Ciccone, Law School Clinic Administrator
This project provided new scanners and technology to the in-house clinics at the law school to help limit the over 5,100 copies created per month to document information on the clients. The newly digitized system will save on costs and create a more efficient system for storing information.
6. Greening of Williamsburg Campus Child Care- $500 to Janet Yang, Campus Child Care Director and Marta Sanderson, VIMS Laboratory Specialist
As a part of a continuing effort to improve the Campus Childcare facility, this funding will support an expanded recycling and composting program as well as an educational program to teach the chilren about recycling and composting.
7. E-Catalogue- $25,000 to Sallie Marchello, University Registrar, and Tina Coleman, Director of Creative Services
The undergraduate course catalogue was shifted into an online format to make it more accessible and to lessen dependence on distributing hard copies of the course catalogues to undergraduates, graduate students, faculty & staff. The first E-catalogue should be ready for the fall of 2013.
8. Sorority Court Composting- $250 to Carolyn Sloan and advisor Larry Smith, Director of Operations for Dining Services
This project encouraged sororities in the complex to compost more efficiently with assistance from facilities management.
