The value of Belonging is the first value noted in William & Mary's Statement of Values and is at the core of every decision made and program offered by STEP. We take seriously our responsibility to ensure that all new students are welcomed into a caring community supported by student leaders and staff who embrace diverse people and perspectives.
To us, it is important that our community's actions speak louder than words. In that spirit, keep in mind that joining a new community may mean being introduced to new academic information and peer beliefs or experiences which come in direct conflict with your current perspective.
In the tradition of the liberal arts and sciences education, we encourage all participants to engage in civil discourse. This means:
- educating yourself by listening, asking questions, and reading
- reflecting on how your own belief set came into being
- recognizing your personal power and privilege
- taking part in open dialogues that strive for understanding and not necessarily agreement
