I-9 Updates
When your H-1B is approved, extended, or transferred, you will need to inform University Human Resources so they can update your I-9, or the official employment eligibility verification.
H-1B Extension
If you are already in H-1B status, as long as William & Mary has filed your H-1B extension before the expiration of your current H-1B, you can continue working up to 240 days (about 8 months) while the H-1B is being processed with US Citizenship and Immigration Services.
To update your I-9:
- Contact Human Resources.
- Say that you need to update your I-9.
- Offer to provide a copy of your I-797 receipt notice, from your H-1B extension.
- USCIS has information on how to update an I-9 in this situation.
H-1B Employees Changing Employers (Porting)
If you are currently in H-1B status with another employer, you may begin working at William & Mary as soon as the university files a petition on your behalf.
USCIS has information on how to complete an I-9 in this situation.
H-1B Approval
Once your H-1B has been approved, you should contact Human Resources again to notify them of the approval.
To update your I-9:
- Contact Human Resources.
- Say that you need to update your I-9.
- Offer to provide a copy of your I-797 approval notice. Typically the approval notice will have a copy of your I-94 on the bottom (if your H-1B was submitted as a change of status).
