Help with the Grading Process
Troubleshooting and FAQs
Problem: I can't log into Banner Self Service.
Solution: Banner Self Service is always unavailable between 2:00 - 6:30 a.m. on Mondays so that system backups and maintenance can be performed. Please access Banner Self Service during another time.
Problem: I can't log into Banner Self Service. I receive the message "Authorization Failure."
Solution: You are using an incorrect user ID and/or Password. Enter your W&M Username and password. If you need additional assistance with your W&M Username and password, contact the Technology Support Center at 221-HELP or [[support]].
Problem: Final Grade Worksheet displays but I can't enter grades or the drop down boxes do not appear.
Solution: Either the grades have already been rolled to the student's record or you are not listed as the primary instructor for that CRN. Check the Rolled column. If it displays "Y", you will need to change the grade(s) by obtaining a Grade Completion/Correction Form and submitting it to your school's dean. If you are not the primary instructor, you are not allowed to enter grades.
Problem: One of my students is not on the Final Grade Worksheet.
Solution: The student is not registered in the course. You may wish to contact the student. To register, an undergraduate student will need to petition the Committee on Academic Status through the Dean of Students Office. Graduate students should petition the appropriate Dean's office.
Problem: There is a student on the Final Grade Worksheet who never attended the class.
Solution: In this case, you would assign a grade of 'F' for failure due to excessive absences. It is the student's sole responsibility to drop the course if applicable.
What is Banner Self Service?
Banner Self Service is the self service product used by students, faculty, staff and advisors. A secured web product, Banner Self Service retrieves and records data directly to and from the Banner database, based on the user's role in Banner. All information is live and in real time. Banner Self Service provides information in an easy-to-read format that is available from any computer connected to the Internet. We would appreciate any comments or feedback you have about your Banner Self Service experience.
Which browser do I use?
It is important that your Internet browser of choice be of a recent version. Internet Explorer works best. If you have an older browser version, you can visit the IT website and download a newer version.
Where do I go to get to Banner Self Service on the Internet?
Banner Self Service can be accessed through myW&M. If you use a dial-up or modem connection and have call-waiting on your telephone line, be sure to disable call-waiting when connecting so your Banner Self Service session is not interrupted.
What information do I need to log into myWM?
You will need your William & Mary user ID and password. Do not give your password to anyone else. University Policy prohibits access to the system by anyone other than the authorized user.
I've forgotten my Password or my account has become disabled. What do I do?
If you have forgotten your password, you must contact the IT Help desk at 221-4357 (221-HELP) to have it reset.
Is there a time limit on Banner Self Service?
Yes. For your protection, if your Banner Self Service session has more than 5 minutes of inactivity, your session will be terminated. If you are submitting grades, you should submit often so that all grades you enter are saved. If you time out and have not submitted, the system will not "remember" the grades you entered.
What if I get lost or stuck in Banner Self Service?
If you are having trouble or need to exit Banner Self Service, always click on the EXIT button on the top right of the page. Any data that you entered on the page will be lost.
