Research Computing Data Storage

Cold storage location for research data storage

William & Mary Research Computing is equipped with a cold-storage file server containing ~700TB of storage.  We refer to it as “Research Computing Storage” or RCS. This storage is designed for cold storage, i.e., files are not accessed for computation from RCS. Files are only meant to be archived here for long-term storage. RCS is regularly backed up to our tape library, which is housed in Jones Hall, separate from RCS which resides in ISC.

We can provide automated, regular backups to RCS from Linux workstations, Synology NAS servers, and similar machines (ssh-server functionality required), as well as one-time transfers from a variety of cloud and remote storage providers (Dropbox, Google Drive, etc). If you have large datasets or repositories that you want securely stored, contact [[hpc-help]] for additional details, self-service instructions, or to set up a consultation.

At this time, users requiring less than 4 TB are not charged a fee.  A fee will be requested for usage beyond 4 TB.

Note, you must arrange to have your W&M account activated (by emailing [[hpc-help]] ) on RCS before you can start using it.

The address of RCS is rcs01.hpc.wm.edu.   You can log into RCS directly using ssh:

ssh <user>@rcs01.hpc.wm.edu

where <user> is your W&M username.

Files can be upload and downloaded using scp/sftp or any scp/sftp client (such as e.g. WinSCP).

Please email [[hpc-help]] for more information.
