William & Mary Information Technology is comprised of intelligent and hardworking individuals who exemplify the university’s core values of belonging and respect. Our “Did You Know?” series gives us the opportunity to shine a spotlight on members of our team and introduce others to their work, as well as the unique things that make them tick.

Daniel Norton is the Director of Audio-Visual Design & Integration for W&M IT. Although he graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Film and Video Studies, Daniel found his way into IT through his part-time job at the student union system, where he supported and set up events. This role led to various IT positions at the university, eventually bringing him to William & Mary 15 years ago. Initially serving as a tech for the business school, Daniel now oversees and manages physical IT installations for all professional schools.

Daniel NortonDaniel's passion for IT began at a young age when he started a bulletin board system at age 12. This early project allowed users to connect via phone lines to play text-based games, sparking his interest in technology and troubleshooting. He loves problem-solving and creating seamless solutions.

In his current role, Daniel plans and executes classroom installations, interacts with customers, and consults on major projects like ISC4 and new dorm rooms. One of the most memorable projects he worked on was installing a 165-inch video wall in the Admissions building. He also takes pride in making classrooms more user-friendly and uniform across campus, ensuring students have a consistent and positive experience wherever they are.

No day is the same for Daniel. His responsibilities involve a mix of planning, fieldwork, and customer interaction. He spends time understanding customer needs, designing plans, providing quotes, and overseeing installations. Daniel finds great satisfaction in knowing that his work enables seamless operation of the campus's AV systems, often going unnoticed, which he believes is a sign of successful IT work.

For those looking to pursue a career in IT, Daniel advises exploring different areas within IT, enjoying the technology aspect, and gaining as much exposure as possible. He encourages taking risks and trying new things as well, as it can lead to valuable connections and a better understanding of one's interests.
