Guidelines

How to work with us:
  1. The president speaks for the university regarding any position on federal/state/local legislation or regulation, unless otherwise designated by the president. Faculty, staff, and students exercise their right to speak personally on issues. They should always clarify that their views do not reflect the official position of the university. Guidance on how to distinguish expressions made in your personal capacity can be found here: https://www.wm.edu/as/about/deans-office/communication/deans-messages/attached-files/guidelines-for-separating-personal-and-professional-communications-final.pdf
  2. The Office of Government & External Affairs coordinates university engagement with federal, state, and local officials regarding: (1) legislation; (2) state and federal appropriations; (3) regulations; and (4) campus visits. Please ensure faculty and staff are aware of the need to coordinate and do so well in advance of any engagement.
  3. The Office of Government & External Affairs supports all aspects of preparing for testimony before federal, state, or local entities. Please coordinate with the office before accepting an invitation to testify, including invitations coordinated through professional associations or other organizations.
  4. Invitations for government officials or policymakers to visit campus or engage with members of the William & Mary community should be extended by the president or appropriate Dean or Cabinet member, in coordination with the Office of Government & External Affairs.
    1. W&M as an institution does not sponsor political campaign events. Recognized student groups and individuals, including employees acting in their personal capacities, may reserve space, consistent with university guidelines. Please pursue a reservation before extending an invitation to ensure capacities.
  5. The Office of Government & External Affairs coordinates requests for federal or state appropriations. Please contact the office before making such a request, including signing onto general/industry-wide funding requests.
Questions about these guidelines should be directed to the Office of Government & External Affairs at governmentaffairs@wm.edu.
