Honorariums
The Honorarium Policy provides a framework for offering token payments to individuals who provide short-term, voluntary services to the university. These payments, known as honorariums, are expressions of gratitude and do not involve contractual agreements.
Activities Eligible for Honorariums
- Guest lectures or short-term creative contributions
- Participation in seminars, workshops, or panels
- Recognition for achievements related to educational, research, or public service activities without expected deliverables
Activities Ineligible for Honorarium
- Payments to current university employees or students
- Payments that are negotiated based on service expectations
- Services requiring formal contractual agreements
Payment Limits & Procedures
Honorarium payments are capped at $1,500 annually per individual. Payments exceeding this must follow university procurement procedures. Travel expenses may be covered in addition to the honorarium. Payments are processed through Accounts Payable and are subject to tax regulations.
Special Conditions for Foreign Nationals
Non-resident aliens can receive honorariums under specific visa classifications, adhering to the 9/5/6 Honorarium Rule (no more than 9 days at the university, payment from no more than 5 institutions, within 6 months). Payments to foreign nationals may also be subject to federal tax withholding.
