Lemon Project News
This has been a busy semester for the Lemon Project team.
The archival research continues, and we have presented papers at three conferences—1619 and the Making of America, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, and the Virginia Universities and Race Histories Conference at the University of Virginia.
The Oral History Collection is producing powerful memories, and with the help of a community volunteer, we have traced the origins of two Jim Crow Era shared by alumni.
Women of the Civil Rights Movement: A Lemon Project Class will produce brief biographies and a spring semester Swem exhibit on eight local women.
There have been three Lemon Legacies Porch Talks, co-sponsored with the Center for Student Diversity, the Counseling Center, the Office of Diversity and Community Initiatives, and WMSURE. The first, What I Wish Someone Had Told Me! occurred in September and featured a student panel. The second, Post-Trayvon Martin: Mobilizing An Effective Response to Race and Injustice took place in November. A third Faculty- Staff focused Porch Talk happened in October. Our last event for this semester, Picture the Past: Preserving our History in Photos, will take place at the Bruton Heights School on December 14th. This event, co-sponsored with Swem Special Collections, The James City County Training School/Bruton Heights Alumni Association, and Make the Ground Talk, will provide members of the local community with the opportunity to have their pictures scanned and preserved.
Finally, the Project now has a vital presence on Facebook and Twitter and if you are so inclined please “Like” us on FB and “Follow” us on Twitter.
In closing, thank you for your continued support as we tackle this work. Happy Holidays and we look forward to seeing you during the semester.
