About Monique

For nearly twenty years, Monique has been committed to improving the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of individuals and communities. Her experience stretches across multiple sectors of human growth and development, including public education, foster care services, vocational and disability services, case management and counseling, and higher education. Monique’s advanced education and training include studies in criminal justice and sociology, human services counseling, and education. While studying for her Education Specialist degree (Ed.S.) in School Psychology at William & Mary, Monique explored her interests and opportunities outside of the traditional school psychologist role. Not only did she work within the K-12 setting providing psychoeducational evaluations and services, but she also engaged in research and learning collaboratives focused on social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, and she promoted similar practices within higher education.

Monique enjoys advancing the field of education and school psychology through research and program evaluation. She is particularly focused on the social consequences of special education, the push out of marginalized students, and the integration of culturally-responsive interventions to promote radical healing. Monique’s research projects aimed to understand and address the experiences of black women faculty in Counselor Education Programs across the country, perceptions of belonging and academic success for students of color at PWI, and antiracist education and hiring practices within the higher education setting. She hopes to bring her unique experiences and strong commitment to learning, inclusivity, and equity to the Center for Student of Diversity and the Dean of Students.

She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. where she actively serves as the chair of her chapter’s social action committee. She is an active member of the Virginia Academy of School Psychologists, the National Association of School Psychologists, NASPA: Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, and the NAACP. She also serves as the Strategic Planning Chair of the Virginia State Police - Youth of Virginia Speak Out on Traffic Safety (YOVASO) Advisory Board and on the James Madison University Campus Suicide Prevention Center of Virginia High School Transitions Advisory Committee.

Personally, Monique is the mother of one son (Jayce). Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, going on nature walks, attending sporting events and festivals, volunteering, and relaxing with a good book.
