KINE 460: Health Equity Foundations (1 credit)*
This 1-credit course will introduce you to crucial concepts related to social determinants of health, health disparities, and health equity. Students will research trends in health disparities of underrepresented groups in Washington, D.C. to better understand the current equity gaps in the nation’s capital. This will prepare students to travel to D.C. and observe these trends as well as hear from speakers and organizations working to create a healthier environment for all residents.
KINE 415: Health Equity in the Nation’s Capital (3 credits) COLL 350 approval pending
What is the difference between equity and equality as it relates to health? What factors impact whether someone is able to stay healthy? This course will explore societal factors related to health with an emphasis on how those factors impact Washington D.C. residents. In addition, it will examine approaches for improving health in this geographic area. Students will engage with individuals and organizations in the Washington D.C. area that tackle these issues on a daily basis. Class sessions will be interactive and involve a blend of D.C. site visits, guest speakers, discussion, and lecture.
*Please note that the 1-credit course will meet during the spring semester in Williamsburg.
