Meet Our New Media Fellows
2012
Sezan Al-Sultan
Sezan Al-Sultan is a graduating international senior at William & Mary and is currently pursuing her B.S. in Psychology and B.A. in Hispanic Studies. She was born and raised in Baghdad, Iraq, and moved to the U.S. in 2004. She has always been interested in experiencing other cultures first-hand and enjoys traveling with her family. Leading and holding offices in a variety of organizations, such as College Red Cross, The Syndicate Hip Hop dance group, Kappa Delta Sorority, and the W&M Orientation Program, as well as interning part-time at Wilson Law LLC, Sezan likes being involved on and off campus and derives pleasure from the many diverse opportunities she is presented with. She speaks Arabic, Spanish, and English and spends most of her breaks in the Middle East with her family and siblings. She loves to spend her free time dancing, hanging out with friends, watching movies, eating frozen yogurt and desserts from Aromas, and indulges in fashion.

Brooke Anderson
Brooke Anderson is a sophomore film studies major and psychology minor at the College. After graduation, she hopes to pursue a career in the television or film industry, either in front of or behind the camera. Because of her love for all things media-related, she is an active member of William & Mary TV on campus, hosting and helping to write, produce, and film the television show “Tribe Choices @ the Movies”. She is currently enjoying being a new member of her sorority Pi Beta Phi, participating in it as well as contributing her time and effort to all social and philanthropy events held on campus. Brooke is also a new member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars organization; she hopes to be directly involved with the service committee by organizing and participating in charitable events. She loves to travel, having spent the first twelve years of her life in Europe, and hopes to return to her home country of the United Kingdom by studying Abroad at the University of Exeter in the spring semester of her junior year. In her free time Brooke loves reading a good book, spending time with friends and watching the latest and greatest films and television shows.

Lindsey Hogge
Lindsey is a sophomore from Baltimore, Maryland. Spanish has always been her favorite academic subject and she is pursuing a degree in Hispanic Studies at William & Mary. She is an avid supporter of the arts, participating in Ballet, Pointe and Modern Dance classes.
On campus, she volunteers for the Alumni Association through the Student Alumni Council. She also loves to travel and explore new cultures and places. She studied abroad last summer in Cádiz, Spain and is looking forward to spending her spring semester in Sevilla, Spain. Upon her return to the U.S, she will be participating in the DC Summer Institute on New Media.
Lindsey is interning at the Spanish Embassy this summer.
Suzannah Howell
Suzannah Howell is a French major and film studies minor at the College. She studied for a year at New York University and spent this past summer studying at Université Paul-Valéry in the south of France through William & Mary; she will also be graduating a year early this coming August. Suzannah is a member of the sorority Gamma Phi Beta and of the Special Events Committee of Alma Mater Productions (AMP), the primary campus wide programming board of the College. In addition to this, she is a member of the Public Relations Committee of the William & Mary Global Film Festival. She has a passion for languages and in the past has studied German and Italian, in addition to her French. Suzannah was born and raised in Richmond, VA where she has enjoyed the city’s evolution from a quiet town of historical landmarks into a bubbling center of music and art along the James River. In her free time, she likes to read Hemingway, go to concerts, and bake.

Dana McKelvey
Dana McKelvey is a junior History and Philosophy major who loves the time she’s spent at the College, whether immersed in academics, riding bicycles with the club cycling team, or having a good coffee with friends. In addition to her studies of cultural and intellectual history, Dana has volunteered for the College’s orientation program for new students; worked with campus publications such as the Monitor Journal for International Studies and Bullet Quarterly Literary Magazine; and participated in international service trips to the Dominican Republic and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Her trip to Sarajevo, Bosnia last summer was part of the student-led William and Mary Bosnia Project—an initiative that began just after the 1990s war in the Balkans with the aim of teaching English, non-violent communication, and film and creative media skills to young children. Dana hopes to continue teaching and traveling, and to explore journalism as a means of spreading cultural awareness and sharing experiences.

Sun Park
I am a rising senior at W&M, double majoring in Music and Film Studies. I am from Seoul, South Korea, and I have been studying in the states as an international student since 2004.
Photography has been my passion for a long time and it became my inspiration for my creativity. I love to take random action shots, rather than posed ones. I believe in serendipity that I tend to be spontaneous and free in terms of creating something.
I am currently working at Swem Media Center, learning new things about media equipments and programs everyday.

Katherine Russo
Katherine Russo is a senior at William and Mary and an English and Government double major. On campus she is actively involved in the College’s “Outreach 360” Team, functioning as team treasurer. As part of the sixteen-member team, she will travel to Nicaragua this winter break to teach English in impoverished areas. Katherine is also involved in the College’s women’s club soccer program, having held the position of the gold team’s captain for the past two years. Katherine is very interested in international relations, having spent last summer in Washington, D.C. interning for the non-profit organization Layalina Productions, Inc., researching and writing on current events unfolding in the Middle East and Southern Asia. Katherine enjoys working with children, volunteering, and outdoor activities, including horseback riding. She plans to pursue a career that allows her to combine the skills she acquired in pursuing both of her majors at the College by applying her English skills towards governmental and international issues, and she hopes to attend law school in the near future.

Katie Sharp
Katie Sharp, a rising junior at the College, is majoring in both English and Literary and Cultural Studies. An active member on campus, Katie participates in the AMP Music committee, which is the main student organization that plans concerts and other musical events. She is also the Social Media chair for an organization called New Forest Earth and a member of Student Alumni Council. Recently, Katie has been initiated into the Delta Gamma fraternity, as well as becoming actively involved in the most recent student fashion publication, Rocket Magazine. She hopes to pursue a career in journalism that incorporates her love for writing, media, and pop culture. In her free time, she loves to turn up her speakers, put on a good album, and read magazines with friends.

Erin Spencer
Erin Spencer, a rising junior at William & Mary, is a Marine Studies major and biology minor. She hopes to pursue a career in marine and aquatic conservation, specifically dealing with coral reef ecosystem preservation. Her goal is to bridge the divide between science and the general public through effective communication of environmental issues. Last summer, she was lucky enough to conduct a research project on the tropical island of Bonaire, studying reef conservation policy and doing lots of SCUBA diving! Outside of the classroom, Erin is involved in Kappa Kappa Gamma women’s fraternity, the College Committee on Sustainability, and is a William & Mary blogger. She can also be found at the barn riding her horse, King, or lounging in the Sunken Gardens on campus. Apart from Williamsburg, she spends breaks in her hometown of Hereford, Maryland, just over an hour away from DC.

Jake Sprang
Jacob is currently a sophomore at the College and plans on graduating in the spring of 2014. The protection of human rights is very important to Jacob and he plans to pursue a regional focus on Western Africa within his International Relations major. After college, Jacob plans to pursue humanitarian work by either traveling to underprivileged states, or by working Stateside for a human rights organization. On campus, Jacob is involved in the rugby club, where he plays number eight and is currently the match secretary. Raised in Ohio, Jacob is very excited about living in Washington this summer and being a part of the New Media Program.

Christina Trimarco
A Junior at William & Mary, Christina is an English and LCST Film Studies double major hailing from Richmond, VA. On campus, she is mainly interested in creative writing, film, and helping campus artists get published in Bullet Quarterly, a creative-non-fiction literary magazine which she helped found. For the past two years, she has interned for the Global Film Festival held at the Kimball Theatre every February and has enjoyed programming the festival with her fellow students. Christina is an active member of both the Phi Sigma Pi honors fraternity and Alpha Chi Omega sorority where she is risk committee representative of her class. Off campus, she volunteers for James River Writers, a Richmond non-profit group dedicated to aiding local writers and is pleased to be their Spring 2012 intern. When she isn’t concocting coffee drinks at The Daily Grind or teaching a Spinning class at the Rec Center, Christina loves to write, edit poetry, listen to Pavement, and watch Seinfeld. She plans to study abroad next Fall and looks forward to pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing after graduation.

John Welch
John Welch is a sophomore at the College and plans to double major in Art and Mathematics. If it were allowed, he would minor in Film Studies as well, as cinema has always been his biggest interest. John is inspired by creative people, and likes to think in unique ways. Outside of classes, his biggest passion is Alma Mater Productions, where he works as a member of the Late Nite Committee. He greatly enjoys planning bi-weekly events and catering to the interests of the community, always being up-to-date on what students find trendy. His free time revolves being current on any and all pop culture-related news, and his dream job is to work as an Imagineer at Walt Disney World.
John is interning with DC Shorts this summer.
