The respondent glanced over at another student's paper during an exam. The panel believed that the scope of the offense aligned more closely with a Level II Violation due to the minor portion of the final grade being affected and did not feel that the violation warranted the presumptive sanction of suspension for a Level III Violation. Thus, the panel assigned the primary sanction of Probation with loss of priveledges through Spring 2017 and Probation through Fall 2017. In addition, the panel noted that the respondent exhibited a lack of understanding of the community of trust at William & Mary which prompted the panel's decision to assign many rehibilitative secondary sanctions.

The student plagiarized, without citation, a class paper. The panel considered the severity of the offense and the extent of the plagiarism in coming to its decision. In addition, the panel determined that there were extraordinary circumstances deeming the sanction appropriate. The panel decided that there was sufficient reason to believe that the student understood the requirement of and responsibility to follow proper scholarly procedure. Since the student was fully aware that such an action was impermissible and still decided to plagiarize, the panel determined that the student showed negligence in this matter, thus necessitating the the sanction determined by the panel. An additional extraordinary factor detailed by the panel was the student’s prior record, yet due to the nature of the record this fact did not serve as an aggravating factor.

The student copied off of another student's paper extensively during a quiz. The panel considered the scope of the violation but balanced it against the minor weight of the assessment in the overall scope in arriving at its sanction, and addressed a distinct disregard for the community of trust in the secondary sanctions. The student appealed this decision but no grounds were found for review.
