Students Involved In Investigation Process

Information and Resources for Respondents

We recognize being investigated for alleged misconduct may cause disruptions in your academic responsibilities and personal encounters on campus. Respondents are assumed to be "not responsible" unless and until a policy violation is found at the conclusion of an investigation process. We encourage you to become familiar with your rights and responsibilities (pdf) in the process, and to review the information below regarding available campus resources.

Advisors

All parties in a formal investigation process may have an advisor of their choice to accompany them to any meeting, interview or live hearing.

  • Faculty or Staff AdvisorWilliam & Mary trains a group of faculty and staff to serve as advisors, and the Office of Compliance & Equity assigns each party a university trained advisor at the beginning of the internal process.
  • Outside AdvisorA party may choose to have an advisor of their choice, including an attorney that they retain at their own expense. Even if a student chooses to use an outside advisor, they will still have access to the assigned trained university advisor, although only one person can attend interviews, meetings or the live hearing.
