Benefits

Why Carpool? See for yourself.

1. Financial Savings

First and foremost, a single pass is shared by multiple people, potentially reducing the cost of parking by 70% or more, depending on your current parking pass tier.

A three person carpool that evenly shares driving can cut gas and vehicle wear-and-tear costs by 66%.

Based on a survey taken in the spring of 2009, we have estimates as to how much you may be able to save by carpooling for a year with one person (taking into consideration parking costs and maintenance costs):

Estimate of carpool savings, for example W&M Staff member:

Carpool of Three

 Cost per academic year

2. More convenient parking

Parking Services has identified prime parking spots around campus that are reserved for carpool members.  Carpool spaces can be found at the following locations:

  • Old Dominion (3 spaces)
  • Yates/Randolph (5 spaces)
  • Parking Deck (5 spaces)
  • Law School (5 spaces)
  • School of Education (5 spaces).
3. Easier Commute

Carpool users often appreciate the reduced pressure of having to drive every day.  Spending more time as a passenger will also provide you with free time otherwise spent navigating traffic.

William & Mary understands the concerns associated with carpooling.  One of the most common is the fear that without an individual car, a carpool member may not be able to leave campus on short notice.  William & Mary has partnered with Zipcar to offer short-term hire Zipcars to the W&M community (learn more here).  Zipcar is a nationally-renowned company that specializes in car-sharing.  By subscribing to Zipcar for a annual fee, you can reserve any of three cars specifically designated for the William & Mary community at any time of the day, for any length of time.

4. Environmental Impact

Sustainability is a growing tradition at William & Mary and reducing greenhouse gases helps the global fight against climate change.  By joining a carpool, you can become an even larger part of this tradition and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 1,630 lbs of CO2  per year by effectively taking cars off the road through your carpool.
