Steven Henriquez Talavera

Class of 2027

Majors: Linguistics and Global Studies
Research: Effectiveness of Bilingual Education Policies in U.S. Classrooms

About Steven
Steven is a sophomore majoring in Linguistics and Global Studies. Over the summer, he did research focused on the effectiveness of Bilingual education policies within K-12 U.S. classrooms, as language learning for ESL students is different compared to Languages other than English (LOTE). Overall, alongside Professor Barko-Alva's help, Steven found that Bilingual Education is complex and underfunded, therefore policies, whether explicitly mandated or implicitly created by districts, parents or teachers have a direct effect to the language learning ideology for students and need further improvements for students to feel comfortable learning a different language while still preserving their own.
